Can't "Open In New Tab" in Internet Explorer 8

I am running Windows 7 with IE8.
When I right click on a link and click on "Open In New Tab", the new tab opens with "Connecting" at the top. It has been like this since I bought the computer. HP Support said I needed to backup and restore my computer....don't really want to do that.
VERY temped to use another browser.
Before I do a backup and restore - and before I change browers, I thought I would pose my question here.
Any assistance you could provide would be most helpful.
