Cannot install two software products. Problem is the same for both.

When I try to install two different software packages, I get a box that says:

This setup will perform an upgrade of '$% *)'.
Do you want to continue? Yes or No

and then installation fails.

I cannot find the problem entry in the registry using the name of either software.
I hope that someone has seen this and can help me resolve it so that I can install these programs.
