Hi my daughter's computer has just ...

I think it died:(
We turned it on the other day and the Compaq red screen with logo comes up, and it says hit escape to access startup menu .....
 
if we do not hit escape it changes to a black screen with a cursor in upper left corner and nothing happens
if we go to startup menu we can access bios, system information, and system diagnostics.
there it says system recovery - but that doesn't work
 
the pc did not come with a cd, it was her xmas gift last year - i am at a loss nothing is working.
I tried a download to get recovery disc and i tried using that at boot but then I get a message that says missing operating system - I am not sure how that
would even be possible, we did not delete it?
 
This is awful she uses this pc for school and I cannot afford to buy her a new one, she barely has anything on it at all, just school papers and she uses for internet searches for school projects, this is a nightmare
